Bienvenue and Welcome!

Bienvenue à la classe de français!

Dear Students, Parent(s) and/or Guardian(s),

Bonjour! My name is Lindsay Soloway, and I will be teaching your child French this year.  I  hope that your family had an enjoyable summer. I have been teaching homeroom and French for 9 years, and I am excited to be teaching at Rick Hansen PS this year. I have a background in Art Education, and teach French using an action oriented, arts integrated approach. As the French teacher, I hope to provide a welcoming and positive learning environment in the French classroom in order to maximize your child’s French experience positively in a meaningful, fun and engaging way. Please find in this letter some information to help you and your child get started on a wonderful school year.

In the French Class:
The Teacher will…
  • Motivate and encourage
  • Be accepting of all individuals’ qualities and differences
  • Instruct, evaluate and report to parents
  • Provide ongoing positive, constructive feedback
  • Reinforce classroom routines and expectations
  • Discipline accordingly and appropriately
  • Treat students with firmness, fairness and dignity
The Students will…
  • Work hard, listen, participate and try hard
  • Be accepting of all individuals’ qualities and differences
  • Complete daily exercises and homework on time
  • Accept others’ personal/working space
  • Follow expectations and rules set out by the French teacher
  • Check the French Blog for updates, deadlines and notes

Suggested Materials:
In order to help your child stay organized throughout the year, I recommend:

  • One 3-ring 1.5-2” binder
  • Dividers (Les notes, Evaluations)
  • Writing utensils
  • A French/English dictionary (highly recommended)

Homework:
Time will be given during class for students to work on activities and assignments. Homework will generally consist of review of new vocabulary and grammar structures, or work that was not completed during class. It is expected that when students have homework, that it is completed for the following French class, or the discussed due date. Students are also responsible for preparing for tests and quizzes and completing written assignments on time and with care. All assignments and deadlines, including class notes will be posted on our French Blog at frenchatrickhansen.blogspot.ca . Students are responsible for checking and keeping up to date with the blog.

Assessment and Evaluation:
Evaluation will be ongoing throughout each term. The following will be considered:
  • Day to day participation
  • Comprehension of daily listening / speaking / reading / writing exercises
  • Completion and accuracy of responses to daily activities
  • Process and product of projects and tasks
  • Pronunciation and intonation when speaking, reading or giving an oral presentation
  • Test results (diagnostic, formative, and summative)

  • Extra Help:

Extra help and enrichment opportunities will be provided throughout the school year. Please allow your child to seek support when needed, and to challenge him/herself to new learning throughout the year. Recess times and lunch times will be available for support.

Please feel free to contact me throughout the year should you have any questions or concerns by email at lindsay.soloway@yrdsb.ca or by phone at 905-841-6225 x321.

    Merci,
    Mme Soloway
